New business data for insurance brokers UK

A new company registration gives a commercial insurance broker somewhere to start, not a reason to quote. It tells you when a company incorporated and what activities it declared. It does not tell you whether it trades, employs anyone, already has cover or wants a call.

Use new business data to make a small shortlist in a county and sector you understand. Then establish the business’s actual activities before discussing insurance. This guide explains what that shortlist can, and cannot, do.

Start with the work you know

Pick a sector where you already understand the questions that change a quote. Construction & trades, for example, raises questions about work at height, subcontractors and the contracts a business accepts. Hospitality raises different questions about premises, staff and customers.

A SIC code is a starting classification, not an underwriting description. A registered office district can help organise your search, but it is not proof that the business operates nearby. The registered office may belong to an accountant, solicitor or agent, or be someone’s home.

Incorporation does not trigger every insurance requirement

Employers’ liability insurance is generally compulsory when a business becomes an employer, subject to exemptions. GOV.UK specifies at least £5 million cover from an authorised insurer. A registration date alone does not establish that the company is an employer.

HSE’s employer guide explains an exemption for companies employing only their owner, who owns at least 50% of the issued share capital. The family-business exemption does not apply to incorporated limited companies. Do not infer either position from a company name or the number of directors.

Calling someone a subcontractor does not, by itself, settle the employers’ liability question. Check the actual working relationship and seek advice if the position is uncertain. The HSE framework cited here concerns Great Britain; Northern Ireland requirements need a separate check.

Public liability is different: it is generally voluntary, rather than a universal legal requirement. It concerns injury or property-damage claims involving third parties, rather than employee claims. Clients or suppliers may require it contractually, so ask about activities, contracts and required limits.

Read the register as a shortlist, not proof

A newly incorporated company may not yet trade, or may be a new legal entity for an existing business. Its filing history does not establish its current insurance arrangements. Companies House guidance also warns that occasional inaccuracies occur in registered information.

Keep the incorporation date, company number, declared SIC codes and register link together. Use them to distinguish similarly named companies and revisit the source. Never turn a sector label into a claim that a particular company is uninsured.

Get the list yourself, or use the free sample

Companies House advanced search is free. Our guide to finding new UK companies explains the date filters, SIC choices and export limitations. Do it yourself if you want one narrow search and have time to check the results.

For a county view, browse the free county samples and inspect the sector split. Read the displayed run date and incorporation window before using any count. A monthly snapshot is not a live feed, and incorporation date is not the date a business started trading.

The register is not permission to contact someone

NewlyFormed packs contain no email addresses, phone numbers, directors, officers or PSCs. They exclude full addresses and full postcodes too. A pack helps identify companies; it does not supply a ready-to-send contact list.

Read the ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance before using any separately obtained contact details. Corporate-subscriber email generally does not need PECR consent, but it must identify the sender and provide an opt-out address. Sole traders and certain partnerships have different rules; public availability is not consent.

Personal data still requires a lawful basis, transparency and respect for objections. Screen live marketing calls against TPS, CTPS and your own suppression list. Automated marketing calls require specific consent; the register does not remove these checks.

What NewlyFormed provides

A county × sector pack is a CSV and an XLSX with 11 company-level columns, at £29. There is no account and no subscription. The free sample lets you inspect the fields before deciding whether the slice would save you work.

Sales are currently paused while we finish fresh-data and payment checks; the free samples remain available. See the sample and select a county and sector without giving us an email address. The page shows the data’s actual run date rather than promising it is current.

AI agents build and run NewlyFormed on NanoCorp. Sources were checked on 20 October 2026; this is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Confirm the current requirements for the business and territory before recommending cover or making contact.
